"WARRIORS!! COME OUT AND PLAY!!" |
The Baseball Furies were scary guys!
Our anti-heroes start off attending a summit with all the gangs in New York City (this is where you see how creative the makers of this flick were with the costumes) which is put together by the biggest gang in NYC: The Griffs. The Griffs are run by the coolest guy this side of the Mississippi, Cyrus (no, not the dude from Con Air)
Cyrus the Virus asks: "Can this rabbit dig it?"
When Cyrus is murdered, the Warriors are accused of pulling the trigger right as the police raid the summit. Now the Warriors are split up and trying to get from the Bronx back to their home turf of Coney Island. Along the way they are hunted by every gang in NYC so that they can be captured and brought to 'street justice' at the hands of the Griffs.
We meet some awesome gangs and are treated to great fight scenes (great scenes for that era, this is no Matrix people....this is old school brawling with no choreography!) and some interesting gangs.
It ain't pretty...but...well, it just ain't pretty.
If you're a true fan of this flick like I am, and a video game fan as well, you will LOVE the Warriors video game! It actually allows you to play as each gang member with their own fighting moves and you get to meet all the gangs from the movie plus more that weren't in it! The game tells the story of how the Warriors started and where each member came from and how they were all initiated into the gang. Try it!!
The game looks more realistic than the movie! Look! Bruises!
If you've seen this film and enjoyed it, who was YOUR favorite Warrior (or any gang member)? Mine is Dexter's father:
Look at him...all grown up!!
As for the movie, you can't go wrong with it if you're a city person and for those who were raised in the suburbs with a fear of the city, this movie will just make that fear grow!
Either way, ENJOY!!!

I appreciate that this article is a couple of years old now, so forgive my lateness in posting this reply, but Cyrus' gang are actually called The Gramercy Riffs, not the Griffs.
