SHOCKTOBER, DAYS 20 & 21: THE HILLS HAVE EYES 1 & 2 (REMAKES)

"Leave Doug alone....he's a democrat, he doesn't believe in guns."

The Hills Have Eyes are a pair of films that (in my humble opinion) the original movies, both first and second parts.

They're pretty much your straightforward "mutants kidnaps and kills innocents" movies (like Wrong Turn and Texas Chainsaw Massacre), but for some reason they have an extra flair that the others don't.  I'm not sure if it's because the mutants are literally mutated humans (and not X-Men!), not inhuman things that can't speak.

We follow a family who are in an RV and stop at a gas station in the middle of nowhere.  The attendant directs them to a "shortcut" through the wilderness that turns out to be a trap by unseen predators.

The RV hits a spike strip and is crippled in the middle of the hills.  We soon see that the hills, in fact, do have eyes, and a lot more!

As the family settles in, they find that they are in for longest night of their lives!  Someone in the hills do not like having company, and they are bent on getting rid of them!

Very well thought out gore fest that, despite the regular formula used for these type of movies being used yet again, delivers genuine dread, suspense and surprises!  Definitely a sleeper of a horror film!

This film brings the audience to meet a different clan of mutants in the hills who are aware of the events of the first movie and inform us of what has happened to the family in it.

The US government has deployed a small squad of National Guard in order to sweep the area and prevent anything like the horrors of the first movie from happening again.

What the squad does not know is that the mutant clan is aware of their presence and ready to protect their home at all costs!

While better than the original 1970's sequel, this movie was inferior to the first installment.  While the action and gore were there, I felt they sunk into the sexual area too much (which, again, is usually the case with sequels to these types of movies) with trying to show how they intend to impregnate women in order to keep their line alive.

Overall, still a decent movie and a good followup to the first!

To get the full experience, make sure you see the unrated versions of the movies!

So what do you think?  Any movies similar to these that you can think of?

If you'd like to know how these mutants came to be, there is actually a graphic novel that serves as a prequel to the first film and explains everything.  It is rumored that Rob Zombie intends to make that graphic novel into a film!  Let's see what happens!
