Groovy...
So I didn't get the chance to post yesterday because I was visiting my mother and ended up staying until after the premier of The Walking Dead finished and didn't get home until late.
I decided it'd be a good idea to combine both days of Shocktober with The Evil Dead movies (both the original and the much hyped reboot) seeing as quite a few people have asked to have the reboot reviewed.
Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell started an awesome journey with this low budget cult classic that would last throughout decades of movies and a character who would make his mark in movies, video games and comic books.
A group of students from Michigan decide to take a little vacation in an old cabin deep in the woods. Upon arriving, they discover a mysterious book and even more mysterious recording of a professor who apparently recites a passage that summons demons.
What happens next is a series of horrific events from demon possession to limbs being hacked off to dismemberment in a shower of blood! Not to mention some disturbing actions by a tree...
Amid all the chaos, the main character, Ash, rises as the unlikely hero who spawned sequels and cult fame!

To this day, regardless of how unbelievable it is, this movie is still one of the top horror movies of all time. The special effects and camera shots were groundbreaking and are very well responsible for many of the horror movies we now love today. Not to mention that Ash has become one of the coolest characters in history thanks to his debut here.
Definitely worth a watch despite it being over 30 years old!
In this very VERY good remake of the original, we follow a group of friends (all from Michigan, as well) who are trying to help one of the group detox from her drug addiction. Their plan is to go to an old cabin deep in the woods, far from any form of civilization, so that the girl can go cold turkey without going somewhere to relapse. One of the friends is a registered nurse so the group is ready to take on the challenge.
Unbeknownst to them, a ritual was done at this very cabin some time ago and, as a result, a mysterious book was left behind. As the group begin to deal with the withdrawals of their friend, one of them decides to read it and winds up unleashing the evil that was dormant.
The group now must deal with their own being possessed and killing each other while trying to figure out how to stop the madness!

I enjoyed this film. In comparison to the original (comparing the two movies is inevitable because the remake had Raimi and Campbell at the helm who were instrumental in making the original a classic), this movie was not as attention grabbing. Don't get me wrong, it was good.
Here are some pros and cons.
CONS:
- Why do people in these type of movies ALWAYS investigate when the possessed person claims they're better now??? It gets annoying after awhile
- The possessed people all look like semi-intelligent zombies rather than possessed people like the original movie.
- The main "evil" was not as powerful as expected, nor was it really necessary to have in the movie.
PROS:
- Bloodier than the original.
- More cringe-worthy than the original (I found myself looking away in disgust at some of the awesome special effects where people were getting hurt and killed)
- Better back-story than the original - this movie gave the characters a legitimate reason for going to a rural area (to help a friend go cold turkey from drugs) and a legitimate reason for them to stay there (the detoxing friend was the one to experience all the horrors first, but no one believed her because she was "hallucinating" from withdrawal)
- Many nods to the original film (click here to see a bunch of references to the original movie)
For all you Evil Dead fans out there, keep watching through til the credits end, you won't regret it!!
